Real Voices of Philadelphia
Real Voices began as a dream that Owen Simons and his parents Wystan and Edward had, for a place that would be an academic and social bridge to the rest of the world. Owen was presumed intellectually disabled until May of 2018, when his voice was freed.
What we offer
Real Voices of Philly is a non-profit organization dedicated to the support of Philly area non-speakers - those whose motor dysregulation (apraxia) prevents other types of communication, by voice, gesture, or signing. We start from the presumption that body behaviors are not an accurate measure of intelligence.
Our objective is to support a meaningful adult life for those who type & spell to communicate.
We offer weekly in-person opportunities for education & connection with peers, also field trips for theater and museums. We work to raise awareness in the Philly community about spelling to communicate, and endeavor to connect families with area teachers and trained CRPs*. And we provide programs to support the parents and families of non-speakers in the arduous job of caregiving.
